Each of us has probably been given a prescription from a doctor at some point. Someone once wrote a brief history of medicine:
History of Medicine
2000 BC "Here, eat this root."
1000 AD "That root is heathen. Here, say this prayer."
1850 AD "That prayer is superstitious. Here, drink this potion."
1940 AD "That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill."
1985 AD "That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic."
2000 AD "That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root."
The word "prescribe" literally means "write (scribe) before (pre)." The Romans would put a prescript at the heading of a page which stated a rule or law and then gave commentary on the rule. A doctor's prescription is a rule or law that is given to be followed and hopefully benefit you. This is why we often say someone is "obeying the doctor's orders." God gives rules in His Word not to make life miserable but to make life for us healthier and easier. The Great Physician never gives too big a pill to swallow, but rather exactly what you and I need. Be sure to take your medicine from the Word of God this week.
This afternoon I will leave right after the morning services to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina. I will be preaching Sunday through Wednesday for my good friend Pastor Brian Correll. Brian was the first assistant pastor I ever hired and now is doing a great job as a Senior Pastor in Conover which is just east of Hickory. Pray for these meetings this week. May God bless you.
