  • Sermon on the Mount Week 7

What Does It Mean to be a Peacemaker?
             Peacemaker Means Reconciler
The Presence of Righteousness Which Permits Right Relationships
How Will We Know When We are Peacemakers?
The Peacemaker is the Christian Who Shares His Faith (Rom 10:15)
The Peacemaker Maintains Peace (Prv 15:1)
             Peacemakers Must Maintain Personal Peace
Peacemaking Extends Beyond Maintaining to Restoration (Matt. 5:23-24)
Peacemakers Never Seek Peace At the Expense of Purity (Ps 85-10)
Peacemakers are Content to Bear Complaints From Both Sides
             Peacemakers Exercise Self-Control
             Peacemakers Exhibit Tireless Patience
What is the Result of Being a Peacemaker?
For they shall be called the children of God
Children (tekna) Should Read Sons (huios)
Sons Means Partaker of the Character
We Reflect the Character of Our Heavenly Father
             Called Means Recognized
The Beatitudes Are A Portrait of the Believer
All The Characteristics of the Beatitude Believer Are Intolerable to An Evil World
To the Degree We Fulfill the First 7 Beatitudes, We Will Experience the 8th
They which are persecuted-Have Been Persecuted
Persecuted-To Pursue With Diligence in Order to Obtain
             What Kind of Persecution?
Not Due to Our Own Disobedience
             Not Because We Are Objectionable
Not Because We Are Intolerant of Non-Critical or Non-Definitive Christian Views
The Blessing is Restricted to Suffering for Righteousness Sake
             Repeated Blessing
Theirs is the kingdom of heaven-Emphasis
             Expanded Description of Persecuted
             Blessed are ye-Disciples Addressed Directly
Believers Continue in the Succession of the Prophets
Purpose of Following in the Footsteps of the Prophets: Glorify Our Father in Heaven
Persecution May Not Be to the Extent Suffered by the Martyrs
Shall Revile-Means to Cast in One’s Teeth
All manner of evil against you falsely-Every Wicked and Malicious Lying Word
For my sake-Enemies of Christ Are Enemies of His Sons (Rom 8:36)
Godly Living Provokes Ungodly Men to Be Resentful
Probably the Reason Christianity is Tolerable in the World is Due to Compromise

  • Sermon on the Mount Week 6

How Will We Know When We are Merciful?
             Physically-
When We Come to the Aid of Someone in Need
             When We Hold No Grudges
When We Never Retaliate or Seek Vengeance
When We Do Not Expose Someone else’s Weakness or Failure
             Spiritually-
When We Have Pity For Souls Without Christ
When We Prod Others About Their Sin (2 Tim 2:25 & Titus 1:13)
When We Pray For Souls Without Christ
             When We Preach The Gospel
What is the Result of Being Merciful?
             For they shall obtain mercy
Giving Mercy, Obtains Mercy From God
Mercy Is Evidence Of A Converted Heart (Luke 6:36)
             Mercy Is A Blessed Cycle
Blessed are the pure in heart…
What Pure In Heart Does Not Mean
             Outward Conformity to Rules
Right On the Outside Does Not Mean Right on the Inside (1 Sam 16:7)
Purity Measured By Man’s Standards (2 Cor 10:12)
Not Just Pure Motives or Sincerity
             Not Just Morality
What Does Pure In Heart Mean?
             Heart-(kardia) Never The Body Part (Prov. 23:7 & 4:23)
Thinking, Feeling & Acting All Originate in the Heart
    As A Christian:
Positional-Imputed Righteousness Makes Us Pure (Christ)
Practical-Living Out What We Already Have By Position
How Will We Know When We Are Pure In Heart?
             Positional At Salvation
             Practical in the Following Ways:
When Our Mind Controls Us to Act Like Christ (Phil 2:5 & Ps 19:14)
When We Are Steadfast in the Work (Ps 57:7 & 1 Cor 15:58)
When Our Hearts Are Unmixed in Devotion & Motivation (Matt 6:21, 24; James 1:8)
When Holiness Becomes An Active Goal (2 Cor 7:1)
What Is The Result Of Being Pure in Heart?
             For they shall see God
             Shall see-Shall Be Continually Seeing
To The Soul, God Is Visible Now
One Day, We Will See God With Our Physical Eyes (1 John 3:2)
             Blessed are the Peacemakers…
             What Peacemaker Does Not Mean
             Not People Who Are Peaceful
Not People Who Attempt to Bring About Peace by Human Means
Not People Who Just Want the Absence of Conflict
             Not Peace At Any Price
The Example of the Greatest Peacemaker
Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Is 9:6 & Rom 15:33)
He Made Peace Between God & Man by Removing Sin (Eph 2:14)
To the Believer, He Makes Peace Possible Between Man & Man (Eph 2:11-22)
The Gospel is the Greatest Peacemaking Message
