    A Pilgrim Psalm                               Psalm 130 
             Title: A Song of Degrees
             There Are 15 Psalms of Degrees
             Various Explanations:
             Chanted As One Ascended the Steps to the Temple
             Chanted On The Approach to Jerusalem in Pilgrimage
             Degrees Can Also Mean Steps or Ascent
             A Step-Like Progression of Thoughts
             A Psalm For The Physical & Spiritual Approach to God 
             His Desire Towards God
             A Visit to the Bottom of the Sea
             Depths-Associated With Afflictions & Troubles Brought About By Sin
             There Are Many Depths:
             Poverty
             Sorrow
             Mental Darkness
             The Most Horrible is Sin
             I cried unto thee-The Language of the Depths
             Lord (Adonai)-Majesty, Honor & Sovereignty
             Hear my voice-Audible
             Thine ears be attentive-It is Better to Hear Prayers, Than to Answer Them 
             His Repentance Before God
             A Visit to the Courtroom
             A Consciousness of Sin is The 1st Step
             The Lord Does mark iniquities & These Break Fellowship
             Mark-Takes Notice, But Not to Keep Score
             Iniquities-A Thing Which is Not Equal or Un-equal-ties
             No One Can Stand In That Kind of Judgment
             God’s Grace Discovered
             Christ’s Sacrifice on Calvary Already Paid the Price
             Fear-Includes the Ideas of Worship & Obedience
             Gratitude Produces More Fear Than Punishment 
             His Attendance Upon God
             A Visit to the City Walls & The Watchman
             The wait is For the Lord Only
             If God Makes Us Wait, It is For Our Good
             God’s People Have Always Been A Waiting People
             Waiting & Hoping Go Hand in Hand
             No One Will Wait for Something He Has No Hope of Getting
             Waiteth…watch-Guard Duty
             It is An Expectant Wait
             God‘s Delays Are Not Necessarily Denials 
             His Expectations From God
             A Visit To The Slave Market
             Hope in the LORD-Trust Him About the Future
             Plenteous redemption-Literally Means Multiplied Ransom (Titus 2:14)
             He and He Alone Can Redeem
             He shall redeem-A Certainty
             Saved From All Iniquities, Saved Completely

    A Prayer of Repentance                        Psalm 51:13-19   
             Teach transgressors thy ways-Let Me Show My Gratitude
             None Instruct Others Better Than Those Who are Taught of God Themselves
             Sinners Converted-The Goal (Ps 32:8)
             Bloodguiltiness-Uriah’s Blood on David’s Hands (2 Sam 11:6)
             God, thou God of my salvation-Faith Grows By The Exercise of Prayer
             My tongue shall sing aloud-A Great Sinner Pardoned Makes A Great Singer
             Open thou my lips-Guilt Sealed Them, But Grace Opens Them
             Thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it-No Sacrifice for Adultery & Murder
             Thou delightest not in burnt offering-No Satisfaction In The Act of Slaying What God Created (Is 1:11ff)
             The sacrifices of God-The Ones He Really Values and Desires
             A broken spirit-Humbled Spirit That Is Fully Yielded to Whatever God Desires
             A broken and a contrite heart-Crushed
             Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion-Prayer for the People Under His Charge
             Build thou the walls of Jerusalem-Don’t Stop the Work on Account of Me (1 Ki 3:1)
             Then-When the Walls Are Completed
             Shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices-Publicly Acknowledge God’s Help
             With burnt offering and whole burnt offering-Complete Surrender
             Offer bullocks upon thine altar-Great Occasions of Praise

     

  • Psalms Week 8

    A Prayer of Repentance                            Psalm 51:1-12         
             Have mercy upon me-Appeals to Mercy Before Mentioning Sin
             O God (Elohim)-Unworthy to Utter the Covenant Name Jehovah
             According to thy loving-kindness-Act According to One of Your Attributes
             Multitude of thy tender mercies-Observed Goodness of God
             Blot out my transgressions-Wipe Out or Erase
             Wash-Refers to the Cleansing of Dirty Clothing (Is 1:18)
             Cleanse-Refers to Defilement Caused by Touching Something Unclean or From Disease (Lev 11:32; 13:1-3)
             Acknowledge-Recognize & Confess Are the First Steps to Repentance (1 Jn 1:9)
             Sin is ever before me-Impossible to Forget
             Against thee-The True Character of Sin
             Every Sin is Mainly Against God
             Evil in thy sight-Open Acknowledgement of Sin By Choice
             Be justified…be clear-I Want All to Know, I Deserve To Be Judged
             Shapen in iniquity-Sinner By Nature
             Sin…my mother conceive me
             Does Not Mean That Sex in Marriage is Sinful
             Does Not Mean His Inherited Fallen Nature Was An Excuse for Disobedience
             Does Mean He Was No Better Than Any Other Man in the Nation
             Behold-Discovery Worth Taking Notice
             Truth in the inward parts-Not Just Outward Ritual (Job 38:36)
             To God, The Inward Is As Visible As The Outward
             Hidden part…to know wisdom-Fear of the Lord (Ps 111:10)
             Purge me with hyssop-A Plant Used in Ritual Cleansing (Heb 9:22)
             I shall be clean-Nothing But the Blood
             I shall be whiter than snow-Enduring Purity
             Make me to hear joy & gladness-Experience Fellowship Once Again
             Bones…broken may rejoice-The Crushing Pain May be Replaced by Gladness
             Hide thy face from my sins-Make Them Unknown (Is 38:17)
             Create-Shape, Fashion; Always By Divine Activity
             Clean heart-New Creature (2 Cor 5:17)
             Renew a right spirit within me-Give Him a Steadfast Spirit That Would Not Wander 
             Cast me not away-Preservation in Service (1 Cor 9:27)
             Take not thy Holy Spirit from me-Ineffective Ministry
             Church Age Believers Indwelt by the Holy Spirit Permanently (Jn 14:15-18)
             Believers Can Still Lose Holy Spirit Power
             Restore…joy of thy salvation-Still Saved, But Sin Robbed Him of Joy
             Uphold me-Preserve Me From Falling
             With free spirit-David’s Own Yielded Spirit

    The Prayer of Faith in Time of Distress             Psalm 6 
    l     Title
    l     Neginoth-Stringed Instrument
    l     Seminith-Eighth Key; Probably the Bass
    l     David Asks Jehovah to Refrain From Severe Judgment Against him
    l     Rebuke-Discipline
    l     Anger-Nostril
    l     Conscious of Sin, David Does Not Ask to be Spared
    l     David Asks to be Chastened in Love
    l     Neither… in hot displeasure-Wrath
    l     When God Deals with His Children, Usually Rebuke Precedes Chastening (Prov 3: 11-12)
    l     Sometimes Chastening is for Disobedience
    l     Other Times, To Prepare Us for What is Ahead
    l     Mercy-Not Getting What We Deserve
    l     I am weak-To Droop or Be Feeble
    l     Vexed-Shaken With Fear
    l     His Soul is More Shaken than His Body
    l     O Lord, how long?-The Impatience of Sorrow
    l     Answer: As Long As It Takes
    l     What God is Seeking is Submission
    l     David Now Asks Jehovah to Do Something For Him
    l     Return-Turn Back to a Point Previously Held
    l     David is Asking for a Return of God’s Favor
    l     Deliver…save-Both Verbs Have the Idea of Rescue
    l     Thy mercies’ sake-(Hesed) Loyal Love
    l     Remembrance-What is Remembered, implying giving honor
    l     Grave-(Sheol; NT Hades) A Place Under the Earth Where the Dead Reside
    l     Praise God While We Yet Have Breath
    l     My groaning-Christians Can Groan, But Not Grumble
    l     All the night-or Every Night
    l     Bed to swim-Overflow or Flood
    l     Water-Drench
    l     Couch-Daybed or Recliner
    l     Mine eye is consumed-Dull or Sunken
    l     Because of grief…enemies-Continued Stress
    l     Sickness & Pain Either Make Us Better or Bitter, and the Difference is Faith
    l     Don’t Ask “When Will I Get Out of This?”
    l     Ask “What Will I Get Out of This?”
    l     Depart from me-Command to Separate
    l     Lord hath heard-David Speaks From An Inward Conviction of the Holy Spirit
    l     Weeping-The Language of Weeping is Universal
    l     Hath Heard-Faithful in the Past
    l     Will receive my prayer-Conviction of Faithfulness for the Future
    l     Faith Banishes Fear (John 9:31)
    l     Let-Predictive, If the Enemy Will Not Repent
    l     Be ashamed-Failed Plots Revealed At the Last Judgment
    l     Return-Take to Flight
    l     Ashamed suddenly-Enemies Falsely Believe Winning, But Loss is At the Door
