  • Life of David-Youthful Years Wk 5

     1 Samuel 17:12-31
Eight sons-Difference Not Contradictory; Possibly One Younger Son Died (16:10)
Went among men for an old man-Advanced in Years
Take now for thy brethren-The Families Supplied the Food for the Army
Parched corn, loaves, cheeses-Dried Corn & Bread for his Brethren; Cheese Curd for the Captain
Take their pledge-Token of Health or Safety
             Now Saul-Jesse’s Directions to David
n     Rose up early in the morning-No Procrastination
n     He came to the trench-Place of the Wagon Track
n     David left his carriage-The Food He Was Carrying
n     Ran into the army-Where the Troops Were Arrayed for the Battle
n     There came up the champion-Out of the Ranks of the Army
n     David heard them-Perhaps for the First Time in His Life He Heard the Lord Being Ridiculed
n     The men of Israel…fled from him-They Drew Back in Haste From the Edge of the Ravine
n     The man who killeth him…the king will enrich him-Management Incentive Plan
n     Great riches-More Than Money; Status & Honor
    n     Daughter-Michal; Additional Royal Privileges
n     His father’s house free in Israel-Maybe Taxes, But More Probably Free from Personal Service
n     David spake to the men that stood by him-First Time He Heard of the Incentive & Asked for Further Information
n     Uncircumcised-Outside the Covenant Relationship with the Lord
n     The armies of the living God-Covenant Members; Not Led by a Lifeless Idol
n     So shall it be done-The People All Confirm the Kings Offer
n     Eliab’s anger was kindled against David-His Elder Brother Regards David’s Talk as Bragging
n     Why camest thou down hither?-What’s the Real Reason you came?
n     With whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness?-Insulting David about Value & Belittling His Service
n     Pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart-Opposite of the Holy Spirit’s Evaluation (Acts 13:22)
n     Come down that thou mightest see the battle-Watch Others Die
n     Both Passages Present Eliab in a Bad Light
n     Eliab Was Less of a Fighter Than He Pretended to Be
n     David’s Answer is Gentle & Shows Spirit Command of His Emotions
n     The Conquest of His Own Emotions Was in Some Respects Greater than His Conquest of Goliath (Prov 16:32)
n     We Need to Choose Our Battles Wisely
n     David Knew the Right Priority
n     Is there not a cause?
n     Jesse Sent David to the Camp
n     David Resented the Injury Done to Israel’s Honor by Goliath’s Challenge
n     David was Persistent in His Words With Others Nearby
n     They rehearsed them before Saul-We Found a Volunteer

    Goliath’s Challenge         1 Samuel 17:1-11

Philistines Camped on  Eastern Slope at The Valley of Blood
Saul was Camped on the Western Slope
Both Took Mountain Slope Positions Because of the Effects of Gravity
Valley (emek) verse 2 Means Broad & valley (gai) verse 3 Means Ravine
             Where Was David?
No Major Battle Had Taken Place with the Philistines for 27 years
David Was Returned Home to Watch the Sheep for at Least 40 days
David Was in God’s Finishing School for Battle (Lion & Bear) in Private (Matt 6:4)
David’s Actions Show Attitudes We Must Adopt:
A Believer Must Give Their Schedule Over to God
             Our Disappointments Are God’s Appointments
David Was Busy Being the Best Shepherd
Champion-Literally, A Man of the Two Middles
Of Gath-Philistine City Inhabited by the Race of Anak (Josh 11:21;Dt 1:28; Gen 6)
Height was six cubits and a span
             Cubit-Generally, 18 inches
Span-Span (sit) 8 inches; This Word zereth Means Handbreath or 4 inches
This Would Make Goliath 9 Feet 4 inches Tall
Armed with a coat of mail-Literally, Clothed in a Shirt of Scales; about 200 lbs.
Greaves of brass upon his legs-Shin Guards
             A target-Javelin
Spears head weighed six hundred shekels of iron-25 Pound Head on a Spear
One bearing a shield went before him-A Man Carrying a Shield the Size of a Full Grown Man
To Israel He Was Too Big to Fight; To David He Was Too Big to Miss
Choose you a man for you-Representative Combat; Winner Take All
We Face Giants in our Own Valley
Giants like Worry, Fear, Uncertainty, Change
             They Don’t Come Just Once
We Can’t Fight Them in Our Own Strength Either
I defy the armies-To Cast Scorn or Insult
They were dismayed-Terrified and Uncertain What to Do

  • The Life of David-The Youthful Years Week 3

    1 Samuel 16:14-23
    ·        The Theme is : The LORD Was With David
    ·        God Has A Personal Plan For Every Believer
    ·        David’s New Status Before The Lord Stood in Sharp Contrast to Saul’s
    ·        The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul-Still Saved, But No Enabling Power
    ·        An evil spirit from the LORD troubled him-Worse Than Without The Holy Spirits Power
    ·        Evil (ra)-Means Bad, But Also is Translated Distressing, Harmful, Miserable, Sore, & Grievous
    ·        Troubled (baath)-To Fall Upon, Startle, Terrify; Sometimes Translated Frightened or Overwhelmed
    ·        What Are the Views About This Evil Spirit?
    ·        Saul Was Demon Possessed; Unlike God’s Character Toward His Children
    ·        Saul Had a spirit of Discontent Created by God in the Heart of Saul; More Than a Troubled Conscience
    ·        God Removed the Hedge And Allowed Saul to be Influenced By An Evil Spirit
    ·        Part of His Discipline Because of the King’s Rebellion
    ·        How Was David First Brought Into Contact With Saul?
    ·        Though Saul Was the One Being Troubled By the spirit, He Did Not See the Cause or the Remedy
    ·        Saul’s servants-Closest Attendants
    ·        The Servants Diagnose the Problem & Suggest the Treatment
    ·        Cunning player-Experienced
    ·        Harp-Lyre
    ·        Be well-Pleasing: Not Healed of the Cause
    ·        One of the servants-Young Men
    ·        I have seen-Probably With David at Ramah
    ·        Mighty valiant man…man of war-Before Goliath
    ·        Exhibited the Qualities of a Good Soldier (Ps 18)
    ·        Saul & His Attendants Did Not Understand the Extent of David’s Relationship With The Lord
    ·        They Never Would Have Invited Him to Come
    ·        Because Saul Gave Valuable Court Training to His Successor & Allowed David to Make Friends in Gov’t
    ·        Stood before him-Literally, Stood Before His Face; Entered Temporary Service
    ·        Loved him greatly-In a Short Period, David Was Well Liked
    ·        Became his armor-bearer-After Some Time, Saul Assigned Him a Sought After Role
    ·        Formal Asking of Jesse For Permanent Position in the Court
    ·        Played with his hand-Evil Spirits Can’t Stand Godly Music
    ·        Was refreshed-Literally, Became Wide; Found Relief
    ·        David’s Soothing Remedy for Saul’s Malady Was Simple Yet Effective
    ·        Though David Played, His Success Depended Upon The Spirit

  • The Life of David-The Youthful Years Week 2

    1 Samuel 16:6-13
n     Samuels Trip From Ramah to Bethlehem Was About 10 Miles
n     God Had Given Samuel the Family Name, But Withheld the Individuals Name
n     God Allowed Samuel to Imagine What This King Would Be Like
n     All Were Called to Worship
n     The People Would Have to Go Home to Sanctify Themselves
n     Jesse Would Have Been Told to Bring the Whole Family, But Chose Not to Bring David  (1 Sam 17:20)
n     The Worship Service is Not Recorded, But Took Place Between Vs 5 & 6
n     Anointing of the Next King Was to Be in Private:
n     Samuel Would No Doubt Have People Around Him Continually
n     Anything Other Than the Private Meeting Would Eliminate the God-Given Disguise, and Increase the Chance of Saul’s Wrath
    n     When they were come-To Jesse’s House
n     Looked on Eliab-Jesse’s Firstborn Son Was Reviewed by Samuels Mind (17:13)
n     Surely the LORD’S Anointed is before him-Why Did Samuel Think This?
n     Samuel Was Impressed By His Appearance & His Height (10:23)
n     The Lord Ended His Silence About His Will & Gave the Principle:
n     The LORD seeth not as man seeth-Superior Ability
n     For man looketh on the outward appearance-Literally, “The Eyes”; Meaning Physical Qualities & Appearance
n     But the LORD looketh on the heart-Intellect, Emotion, & Will
n     Eliab Was Not Only Un-chosen, But Un-Shown
n     Are here all thy children?-Experience Seemed to Contradict Revelation
n     Remaineth yet the youngest-(haqqatan) Smallest
n     Jesse’s Defense of Why David Was Not There Was Weak:
n     Samuel Was The Greatest Prophet Alive At That Time
n     Jesse Certainly Knew David’s Interest in Spiritual Matters
n     Jesse Exhibited Parental Partiality or Favoritism
n     He keepeth the sheep-God Calls People Who Are Busy, Not People Looking for Ways to Avoid Responsibility
n     We will not sit down till he come-Urgency in Doing God’s Work
n     Now he was ruddy-(admoni) Reddish, Pertaining to the Color of the Skin or Hair
n     Beautiful countenance-Literally, Beauty of the Eyes
    n     Goodly to look to-Handsome
n     Arise, anoint him for this is he-The Heart Passed the Test
    n     Took…and anointed-Obedience Without Question
    n     Came upon-Came in Power (Jn 15:5)
    n     David-Means Beloved One
n     Principle: God’s Choices Succeed Beyond Human Reasoning (Mk 10:31; 1 Cor 1:27)
n     From that day forward-Superior Anointing to Saul in Duration
n     Did David’s Family Understand the Meaning of the Act?
n     Probably the Family Regarded David as Simply Selected to Be Trained in Samuel’s Schools
