Life of David-Fugititve Years Wk 2

David Meets Jonathan               1 Samuel 18:1-5

n     When he had made an end to speaking-David at the Presentation to Saul
n     The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David-Knit means Knotted or Tied Together Firmly so As to Hold
n     How Close in Age Were David & Jonathan?
n     We Think Our Friends Must Be Near Our Own Age
n     More Important, Our Friends Must Have an Equal Commitment to God
n     Who Was Jonathan?
n     Saul’s First Born Son
n     Destined for the Throne of Israel
n     Mighty With a Bow (2 Sam 1:22)
n     Stood Up to His Violent Father (20:27)
n     Inspired His Armor Bearer in Attacking The Philistines Alone
n     Commanded a Thousand Plus Men in Attacking the Philistines (1 Sam 14:13)
n     He Enjoyed Greater Popularity Than His Father (1 Sam 14:44)
n     Jonathan loved (ahab) him as his own soul-Manly Affection (Ps 18:19-27)
n     David & Jonathan Had Much in Common:
n     Both Courageous & Capable Warriors
n     Both Possessed Faith in the Lord
n     Both Initiated Faith-Motivated Attacks
n     No more home-He Was Established as a Permanent Resident at Court
n     A covenant-Friendship or Brotherhood Sworn Before Witnesses
n     The Two Friends Covenanted that:
n     When David Became King, Jonathan Would be Second in Command (20:16-17)
n     David Covenanted to Protect Jonathan’s Family From Being Slain
n     Most Notable Was the Welcoming Attitude of Jonathan
n     Stripped himself-Jonathan Gave His Official Garments & Armor to David
n     Making David a Friend & Equal
n     Acknowledging That David Would One Day Take His Place (Esther 6:8)
n     David went out-Military Expeditions
n     Behaved himself wisely-Success is the Result of Wise Conduct & Signifies to Prosper
n     Saul set him over the men of war-Temporary Command of Larger Groups of Men
n     He was accepted-No Envy, Why?
n     Because Promotion Was Merited
n     Because David Kept the Words of the Sinai Covenant (Deut. 29:9)
