  Conflict: Isaac & Ishmael          Gal 4:21-31 •         The Appeal •         Tell me-A Command to Answer •         Desire to be under the law-The Will is Moving in That Direction •         Do ye not hear the law?-The Books of Moses  •         The Historical Situation •         Abraham Was 75 When God Made the Covenant with Him (Gen12:4) •         Sarah Was 65 (Gen 17:17) •         Abraham Was Promised to Have Many Physical Descendants  (Gen 13:16) •         No Children for 10 Years •         Sarah Encouraged Abraham to Have a Child by Hagar •         Ishmael Was Born When Abraham Was 86 (Gen 16:1-16) •         Later, Sarah Conceived and Isaac was Born When Abraham Was 100 •         Two Sons by Two Women •         For it is written-Scripture Alone is the Basis for Settling Arguments •         Abraham had two sons-For the Purpose of This Illustration •         one by a bondmaid-A Slave Under the Law to Sarah •         the other by a freewoman-The Rightful Wife of Abraham •         Two Sons By Two Methods •         Ishmael born after the flesh-The Result of Human Planning and Effort (Gen 30:3 & 9) •         Isaac was by promise-Humanly Impossible (Heb 11:12)  •         The Allegory •         What is an Allegory? •         Spiritual Application of a Literal Historical Event •         Birth By Works of the Law •         these are the two covenants •         Sarah Symbolized the New Covenant (Heb 8:6–7 ) •         Hagar the Covenant of Law •         Ishmael Came Before Isaac; So Law Before Grace •         Bondage-Born Under Slavery As Hagar •         Ishmael Did Not Receive the Inheritance •         No Person Can be Born Again by Faith and Obedience to the Law •         Hagar Symbolized the Jews Trying to Gain Righteousness by Their Own Efforts •         Birth by Faith in the Promise •         Sarah is Jerusalem which is above (Heb 11:10, 12:22; Rev 21:2 & Phil 3:20) •         is free-From Bondage of Laws in Earthly Jerusalem (Jn 8:36) •         mother of us all-Offspring of the Right Heir •         barren… travailest not…desolate-Gentiles •         she which hath an husband-Jewish People •         Rejoice-Look to the Future Glory & Triumph of Israel (Is 54:1)  •         The Application •         In Identity •         we, brethren, as Isaac was-Paul & the Galatians Are as Isaac •         Believers are the children of promise •         In Persecution •         Ishmael Was Mocking Isaac After He Was Weaned (Gen 21:8-9) •         even so it is now-In Galatia •         The Judiazers (Representing Ishmael) Were Mocking Paul & The Galatians (Representing Isaac) •         In Discipline •         Cast out the bondwoman and her son-Not the Heir & No Inheritance •         Why?   Strained Relationships                        Gal 4:12-20  •         Brethren-Genuine Brothers in Christ •         The Warmth of the Past •         Paul Had Not Been Permanently Hurt •         Be as I am; for I am as ye are-Indentify With Him •         Ye have not injured me at all-This Current Situation Will Not Come Between Us •         Paul Preached in Weakness •         At the first-First Missionary Journey •         I preached the gospel unto you-Paul Was the Spokesman (Acts 4:12) •         Through infirmity of the flesh-Because of Physical Weakness •         The Galatians Accepted Him Completely •         First, They despised not His Physical Appearance (2 Cor 10:10 & 11:24) •         Second, nor rejected Him Because of These Physical Problems •         Third, They received Him But Not as An Ordinary Man •         My temptation-Dependence Upon Paul’s Own Skills (2 Cor 12:9 ) •         They Would Have Given Him Their Eyes •         Where is then the blessedness ye spake of?-You Have Lost Your Joy •         Plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me-Exchanged Physical Sight for the Spiritual Sight  •         The Coldness of the Present •         They Did Not Like What He Said •         Become your enemy-Emissary to Enemy •         Because I tell you the truth?-Sometimes Truth Can Be Hard to Hear •         They Liked What the Judiazers Said •         Zealously affect-A Deep Concern •         The Zeal of the False Teachers: •         First, It Was not well For the Believers or Truth (Prov. 27:6 ) •         Second, that ye might affect them-Admiration and Financial Support for False Teachers •         They would exclude you-Fence in the Churches and Rule Over Them With Regulations •         Third, zealously affected always in a good thing-Paul Was Not Jealous of Other Good Teachers •         Not only when I am present with you-Learning Should Be Constant   •         The Hope of the Future •         My little children- A Term of Affection by a Teacher to His Disciples •         Maturity in Christ •         Travail in birth-Spiritual Birth is Like Physical Birth •         Again until Christ be formed in you-Paul Travails Now Until They Grow and Shape Up (Eph 4:13–15) •         Removal of His Doubts •         To change my voice- The Attitude One Has For Others •         Stand in doubt of you-How Far Have You Drifted From the Truth    Posted Nov 15 2009, 03:31 PM by jbarch with no comments

  The Danger of Turning Back               Gal 4:8-11  •         Their Pagan Past •         Howbeit then-Let Me Remind You or Formerly •         when ye knew (eidotes) not God-Intellectually or Perceived with the Senses; The God of Scripture •         ye did service unto them-To Serve as a Slave •         which by nature are no gods-These gods Did Not Actually Exist (1 Cor 8:5) •         What They Really Were Doing was Worshipping Satan and his Demons (1 Cor 10:20 )  •         Their Present Position •         after that ye have known (gnontes) God-Experienced, Personal Knowledge From Man’s Perspective •         are known of God-Personal knowledge From God’s Sovereign Position (2 Tim 2:19)   •         Their Perilous Problem •         They Were Turning to Legalism •         how turn ye again-Moving in the Direction They Came From •         to the weak and beggarly elements-From A Position of Strength to One of Weakness •         These Elements Are weak  or Powerless •         Beggarly -Cannot Supply Spiritual Inheritance  •         They Were Desiring to Be Slaves •         ye desire again to be in bondage?-An Act of the Will  •         They Were Observing Ritual Feasts •         Ye observe-They Were Presently Involved in the Mosaic Calendar •         Days-Weekly Sabbaths and the Daily Fasts •         Months-The Start of New Months (Num 10:10) •         Times-Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles •         Years-Sabbatical Year (every 70th) & Jubilee (every 50th) •         These Were Appropriate for the Age of Law •         These Are Fulfilled by the Redemptive Work of Christ (Col 2:16 & Rom 14:5 )  •         Paul’s Perplexity •         I am afraid of you-Concern Over Them Submitting to Circumcision •         labor in vain-The Results of the Missionary Efforts    Posted Nov 08 2009, 02:55 PM by jbarch with no comments

  Biblical Sonship                        Gal 4:1-7  n     Preparation for Sonship n     A Child is Like A Servant n     That the heir-The Only Child Within the Family n     He is a child (nepios)-An Infant n     Though he be lord of all-Potentially n     The Heir Has Two Problems: n     First, Cannot Receive His Inheritance as long as he is a child n     Second, As a Child, He differeth nothing from a servant n     Both the Child and the Servant: n     Possess No Inheritance n     Are Subservient and Obedient n     Analogy: As Long as Under the Law, Cannot Receive the Spiritual Inheritance n     A Child is Under Supervision n     The Time of the Heir is Divided into Two Periods: n     First under tutors and governors or Supervisors n     Tutors-Means Guardians of Minors or Orphans n     Governors-Literally Means House Laws or Stewards n     Second, The Time of the Supervision was Restricted n     A Child Is in Bondage n     Even so we-Paul and the Galatian Christians n     Three Facts About the Bondage n     First, we… were in bondage (douloo)-Under the Law of Stewards n     Second, when we were children-When We Were Unconverted n     Third, the Scope of the Bondage was under the elements of the world  n     Means of Sonship n     The Incarnation of the Son n     Five Features of This Essential Doctrine: n     First, when the fulness of the time-At An Appointed Time n     Second, God sent forth his Son-Pre-incarnate Existence n     The Word sent forth (exapesteilen) Means: To Send Out of (heaven) With a Commission n     The Commission-To Turn Servants of the Law into Sons of God n     Third, his Son-The Only Begotten or The Only One of a Kind n     Fourth, made of a woman-The Virgin Birth n     Fifth,  under the law-To Fulfill the Law, Not to Destroy It (Matt 5:17) n     The Redemption of the Son n     Two Purposes Shown in the Verse n     First, To redeem them that were under the law-Freed from Bondage n     Second, that we might receive the adoption of sons-New Status in Christ (Heb 2:9 & 15)  n     Confirmation of Sonship n     And because ye are sons-Two Realities to Know If You Are a Spiritual Son n     First, Awareness of Our Father in Heaven n     God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son-The Father Sent the Son to Provide the Positions of Sons n     Into your hearts-The Presence of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19 & Rom 8:9 ) n     Crying, Abba, Father-The Spirit Speaks to the Father From Within the Believer (Rom 8:26) n     Second, Joint Heirs with Jesus n     There is a Progression: servant…son…heir n     Thou art no more-Wake Up to the Work of Grace n     An heir of God through Christ-You Have An Assured Place in the Inheritance   Posted Nov 01 2009, 12:23 PM by jbarch with no comments
